Thermoforming: Fundamentals of Plastic Forming Technology

As one of the main plastic forming methods, thermoforming is an important manufacturing process used in various industries. In this article, we will examine what thermoforming is, how it works and in which industries it is used.

What is Thermoforming?

Thermoforming is the process of heating a sheet of plastic material and shaping it with the help of a mold. Thermoplastic materials such as polystyrene, polycarbonate and PVC are often used in this process. Thermoforming takes place in three main stages:

  1. Heating: The plastic sheet is heated to a certain temperature in heating ovens or with infrared heaters. This process softens the plastic material and makes it flexible.
  2. Forming: The heated plastic sheet is placed on a mold and shaped by vacuum, pressure or mechanical methods. The plastic material follows the contours of the mold and takes the desired shape.
  3. Cooling and Cutting: The shaped plastic part is hardened by the cooling process and then removed from the mold. If necessary, it is finalized by cutting and other processes.

Thermoforming offers several advantages:

  • Cost Effectiveness: Thermoforming is generally less costly than other plastic forming methods. It is especially economical for large production batches.
  • Flexibility: Thermoforming is a flexible method for producing parts of different shapes and sizes. Mold changes can be made relatively quickly and cost-effectively.
  • Fast Production: Thermoforming allows for fast production line speeds. Heating and forming processes can be automated, enabling mass production.
  • Various Material Options: Thermoforming can be used on a wide range of materials. Different thermoplastic materials such as polystyrene, polycarbonate, PVC can be preferred.

 

Usage Areas of Thermoforming

Thermoforming is widely used in many industries:

  • Packaging Industry: Blister packs, trays, boxes and inner liners can be produced by thermoforming. This is a common application for the protection and presentation of products.
  • Automotive Industry: Parts used in automobile interiors, recessed panels, consoles and exterior trim parts can be produced by thermoforming.
  • Consumer Electronics: Tablet cases, cell phone cases and other consumer electronics accessories can be produced by thermoforming.
  • Medical Industry: Packaging for medical devices and components for surgical equipment can be produced by thermoforming.
